PERSONALITY:

INTRO

Jin Ling is a cultivator who is the successor to the head of the Lanling Jin sect (organization of spiritual cultivators who use Taoist principles for their magic, led by a family) by birth. At this canon point, he is now Sect Leader by right, despite his young age.


MOTIVATION

Above all, Jin Ling is motivated to prove himself, as the one next in line for the position of Sect Leader. Though he is from the most powerful family in the cultivation world, he is an orphan as well, so many take pity on him or insult him for it. He despises being regarded this way. He wants to be respected for his abilities, outright stating that he's going to open everyone's eyes and make them see that he's stronger than all of them.


RELATIONSHIPS

Jin Ling’s parents died when he wasn’t even two months old, and two of the major figures raising him are his uncles Jin Guangyao and Jiang Cheng. Jin Guangyao had been a doting uncle and caring, having advised him to not fight with those who provoke him. Jiang Cheng is a strict and stern figure to him, though Jin Ling knows that all of his threats of breaking his legs is all talk.

At first, he has no friends his age, but he ends up mixed in with fellow junior cultivators such as Lan Sizhui, Lan Jingyi, and Ouyang Zizhen over the course of the story and bonds with them, even if the relationships are a little uneasy at times.

A major relationship of his that develops over the course of the novel is with Wei Wuxian. For most of the story, he doesn’t know Wei Wuxian’s true identity, instead believing him to be another relative. They manage to bond and Wei Wuxian gives him his own sort of life guidance, which helps Jin Ling to care about him. When he learns of Wei Wuxian’s true identity, he is shocked and feels betrayed with many conflicting feelings, but by that time he no longer wishes him dead.

At this canon point, he is deeply conflicted with the figures in his life. He is deeply saddened and angered by the betrayal of Jin Guangyao, who had a part in his father’s death (even if he hadn’t ordered or directed it) and then even threatened his life. Still, he cannot make himself truly hate any of the people who had played a part in the deaths of his parents, as he had fond memories of them supporting him, too.


FLAWS

However, Jin Ling is also said to be a young man who had all of the shortcomings of his father and his uncle, with none of the good traits from his mother.

He is quick to anger, easily provoked into fights with bullies, particularly that of fellow Jin family members his age. He often talks back angrily at Jiang Cheng.

He can be rather proud and rude, reluctant to apologize or show thanks, as shown when he’s helped by Wei Wuxian. Upon a merchant merely mentioning someone he despises, he knocks over their stall and threatens that he should do worse.

Related to that, he’s also not forthright with his emotions, acting as though he doesn’t want something when he actually does. Though he says he doesn’t want such a simple dish as congee that Wei Wuxian is making, the fact that he’s told that it’s not for him makes him get demanding about his share.


STRENGTHS

Jin Ling does have honor enough to repay debts. After Wei Wuxian saves him, Jin Ling disregards his distaste for him and distracts his uncle in order to free him.

He also shows a protectiveness for those he’s come to care for, putting himself at the ready to kill some sort of monster that he thinks is threatening Lan Sizhui.

He shows an ability to change and gain a different understanding of what he thought he knew before. All of his life, he’s been told that Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning are responsible for his parents’ deaths and he’s sent into a rage when they’re mentioned before him. But over the course of the story, he actually gains respect for them, wanting to help patch the relationship between Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng as well as crying when Wen Ning has been terribly injured.
